Licensing
Overview
How licences, activations and fingerprints fit together.
Licensing
Every purchase of a licensed product issues a licence key bound to the purchasing account.
Model
- A licence belongs to one customer and one product.
- An activation binds a licence to one installation, identified by a fingerprint you compute.
- A licence event records every issue, activation, deactivation, suspension and revocation.
Fingerprints
The fingerprint is supplied by your software and should be stable across restarts and resilient to a change of address. A hash of the machine identifier combined with the installation directory is a reasonable default.
IP address alone is never an acceptable fingerprint: customers behind dynamic addressing would exhaust their activation limit within days.
